Does My Centennial Home Have Aluminum Wiring and Is It Dangerous?

Aluminum branch circuit wiring was used in many homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973 as a cost-saving alternative to copper. It conducts electricity fine, but it expands and contracts more than copper under heat cycles, which causes connections at outlets, switches, and junction boxes to loosen over time. Loose connections create resistance, which creates heat, which creates fire risk. This is the core concern with aluminum wiring, not the wiring itself running through the walls.

The remediation is not a full rewire in most cases. The standard approach is to install AlumiConn connectors or use the copalum crimping method at every outlet, switch, and connection point to create a safe, stable connection between the aluminum wire and a short copper pigtail. When Is Rewiring the Right Answer vs. Repairing?

Rewiring makes sense when the existing wiring is aluminum throughout the home and full remediation is more cost-effective than connection-point-only work, when wiring insulation is degraded or damaged in multiple areas, or when a renovation project is opening walls anyway and the opportunity exists to update wiring at the same time. Repair makes more sense for isolated wiring issues in otherwise sound systems.
