During the cold winters here in Colorado Springs, you rely on your furnace to provide comforting heat for you and your family. In a city where the thermometer doesn’t rise above freezing for weeks on end, your furnace needs to be in working order. A malfunction is not only uncomfortable but can also be a safety hazard. When you need a furnace repair, a chilly night can become an emergency in a hurry!

4 Common Furnace Problems

If you’ve cranked up your thermostat and are still feeling a chill, it’s a good sign your furnace needs to be evaluated and repaired. However, there are other subtle (and not so subtle) signs that a problem is brewing and you should get your trusted HVAC professionals at WireNut Home Services on the line!

Irregular Cycling

Your furnace moves through cycles to maintain the consistent temperature you set through your thermostat. However, you should notice your furnace kicking on and off more than a few times in an hour, or your furnace running without meeting your thermostat’s set temperature, it could indicate a problem.

Not Producing Heat

Your furnace has one very important job: to warm up your home and keep you comfortable when the temperature drops. One of the most common reasons for emergency calls to our team is that air that’s blowing, but not warm.

Won’t Turn On

When your thermostat is in good working order but your home temperature is still dropping, there is a chance your furnace isn’t turning on at all.

Unusual Noises

Your furnace’s sound should be almost non-existent, except for the subtle hum of air rushing through the ducts. Sounds along the lines of grinding, clinking, whirring, squealing, or shaking is cause for concern.

Where Problems Occur

With so many working parts in your furnace, there are dozens of ways your furnace can malfunction and require a  furnace repair. These can range from simple fixes to complex and costly repairs. Here are a few of the most typical problems with your furnace that may occur.

  • Heat exchanger
  • Filters
  • Pilot light
  • Thermostat
  • Ball bearings
  • Blower belt

Need a Furnace Repair in Colorado Springs?

How Can I tell If I Need a Repair

Signs that your furnace may need repairs are:

  • Your gas bills are rising sharply, despite maintaining normal furnace usage
  • Your furnace is making rattling or vibrating noises
  • You have to turn the thermostat above regular settings to keep a comfortable air temperature
  • Any visible rust on, or around, your furnace or any feeder pipes
  • Looking through the burner port on the front of your furnace, the pilot flame is yellow instead of blue (call us immediately on the 24/7 emergency service line if this is the case)

Safety is Our First Priority

An inefficient Furnace can be a potential safety hazard. If you see a yellow burning flame in your furnace it means that the natural gas is not burning properly and can potentially be producing Carbon Monoxide. Get your Furnace Repaired before this becomes an issue in your home.

My furnace is working… but not well! How do I tell if I need to have it repaired or simply serviced?

Signs that your furnace may need repairs are:

  • Your gas bills are rising sharply, despite maintaining normal furnace usage
  • Your furnace is making a rattling or vibrating noises
  • You have to turn the thermostat above regular settings to keep a comfortable air temperature
  • Any visible rust on, or around, your furnace or any feeder pipes
  • Looking through the burner port on the front of your furnace, the pilot flame is yellow instead of blue (call us immediately on the 24/7 emergency service line if this is the case)

Why call you immediately if I see a yellow flame through the pilot port?

Your family’s safety and comfort is The WireNut’s primary concern. A yellow burning flame, either on the pilot light or when the furnace is active means that the natural gas entering the furnace is not burning correctly, and can potentially be producing carbon monoxide. An emergency furnace repair service is highly recommended. As well, while waiting for our service technician to arrive, open a few windows and allow fresh air to enter your home. Carbon monoxide buildup can be dangerous, even fatal.
