The only thing more frustrating than your family members stealing your phone charging cord is finding an electrical outlet where you can plug it in!
Like other parts of your electrical system, electrical outlets and switches are largely taken for granted until they don’t work (or in the case of outlets, they are all in use when you need one!) But these two heavyweights of the electrical system are one of the most vital elements – they bring the power into your home and your devices, appliances, and lights.
Types of Sockets in Colorado Springs
Although there are more than 15 types of plugs throughout the world, in the United States there are two: a Type A plug, which has two prongs and is not grounded; and Type B, a 3-prong grounded outlet. For voltage, most sockets provide a standard voltage of 120V and a frequency of 60Hz.
For sockets that are close to water, especially bathrooms and kitchens – and in recent years, many other places according to building code, your home should include a ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, outlet. This type of outlet protects against electrocution; when the socket senses a shock, it automatically trips the circuit to help avoid injury or death.
A second type is an arc fault circuit interrupter, or AFCI, which protects outlets and the people using them from electrical injury caused by arcing, which can cause overheating, sparking, or catching fire. The AFCI shuts down these outlets before extensive damage happens. These are only currently required by National Electrical Code in bedrooms, but in recent years have been expanded to the entire homes – all to keep occupants from harm’s way.
Yep, they are pretty important!
Electrical Outlet Repair with WireNut Home Services
Because of the high-stakes nature of electrical sockets and switches, hiring a trusted expert for electrical outlet repair is crucial.
Outlets can stop working for a few different reasons.
- Your outlet has faulty wiring
- Your outlet has a bad connection
- Your outlet is a GFCI outlet that’s been tripped
- Your electrical panel has been tripped
Many of these issues can be easily fixed. But first, how do you know your electrical outlet needs to be repaired or if it needs to be replaced?
Your best bet is to contact a professional. Remember, your electrical system is complex and potentially dangerous, and if you have little experience, we highly recommend limiting your exposure to potentially faulty systems!
Performing an outlet repair in your home may save a little money, but it’s not worth the risk of thermal burns, nerve and tissue damage, or far worse. You will be in great hands with our professional electricians.
